Japan's Joint Crediting Mechanism creates a framework through which qualifying emissions reductions and removals in partner countries can generate JCM carbon credits and support international decarbonisation projects.

For the project owner, the important question is not simply whether a project is environmentally beneficial.

The commercial question is whether the Japanese pathway can create enough additional value to materially improve the asset or the investment case.

Start with the economics.

We first assess whether there is a credible JCM or Japanese-support pathway and whether pursuing it is likely to create meaningful value for the project. If it does not improve the economics sufficiently, we do not treat JCM as an objective in itself.

What can Japan add to the project?

Existing asset

An operating power plant, energy asset or industrial facility may be capable of generating eligible future emissions reductions under the JCM. Where a credible methodology and monitoring pathway exists, verified reductions may create an additional source of economic value alongside existing operating revenue.

New project

For a new project, JCM carbon-credit value or applicable Japanese government support may improve returns, strengthen the capital structure and help turn a technically credible project into a more financeable investment opportunity.

Wider project

Can Japanese technology, EPC, strategic participation, equity, debt or offtake make the project stronger? DIOS can work on the wider commercial structure rather than treating JCM as a separate exercise.

The asset comes first

We assess projects where Japan can materially change the economics.

Power generation

Renewable, lower-carbon and other qualifying power-generation assets where measurable emissions reductions may be created.

Energy storage

Battery and other storage projects where the system-level emissions impact and applicable methodology support a credible JCM pathway.

Industrial decarbonisation

Projects that reduce energy use, fuel consumption or greenhouse-gas emissions within industrial operations.

Bioenergy and low-carbon fuels

Bioenergy, biomass, renewable fuels and related projects where emissions reductions or removals can be demonstrated and appropriately accounted for.

Emerging energy technologies

Projects using new technologies or commercial structures where the Japanese pathway may materially improve deployment economics.

The Japan side

A credible project still needs the right Japanese structure.

International project owners often understand their asset, technology and domestic market extremely well. The difficult part is building the Japanese side of the opportunity.

Depending on the pathway being pursued, the project may require Japanese participation, an international consortium, Japanese-side implementation responsibilities and continuing coordination with Japan.

DIOS acts as the Japanese interface.

We work with the overseas project owner while building and managing the Japanese relationships and project structure required to pursue the opportunity.

You keep control of the project. We build the Japan pathway.

Our role is to connect the asset, the commercial objective and the Japanese requirements into one coherent structure — without requiring the overseas project owner to build its own Japanese operating capability.
